Why Is Cognitive Therapy Important in the Treatment of Women’s Emotional Issues?
Although cognitive therapy was developed over 30 years ago primarily by Dr. Aaron T. Beck for the treatment of depression in both men and women, a critical step in the women’s mental health movement has been the acknowledgment that women are uniquely vulnerable to distinct biological and emotional stressors as compared to men. These biological/emotional stressors can include but are not limited to: pregnancy, infertility, menopause, hormonal disturbance, relationship concerns, and increasingly intense work/family responsibilities. Increased and prolongued stress can result in anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems. Cognitive therapy is a proven and effective treatment for anxiety, depression, panic, and obsessive-compulsive disorder - mental health problems which continue to predominantly affect women. It is important that women have access to this cost-effective and pragmatic treatment with a therapist skilled in treating women.
